Google has released the developer preview of the upcoming update, Android N.
As we know, the letter accompanying the operating system follows an alphabetical progression from the previous update and, most importantly, is the initial of some delightful treat.
After Cupcake, Donut, Gingerbread, KitKat, Lollipop, and Marshmallow, to name a few, it’s time for N. If you’re thinking of the delicious spread from Italy that has become famous worldwide for its taste, you’re right.
The new operating system will be Android Nutella.
Already available for developers and those enrolled in the Android Beta Program, the release of the new edition has been moved up, as it was initially expected on May 18th during the Google I/O conference. Although it is not yet accessible to most people, leaked screenshots on the Internet reveal an update full of new features:
# The redesigned notification center will allow interaction with apps directly from this panel, in a much more advanced way than before, without having to enter each one individually.
# A multi-screen mode with an adjustable divider will be introduced.
# Support for picture-in-picture, the display of floating windows over other apps, useful for watching videos during other activities, will be introduced.
Nothing particularly new, as all these features are already present in Windows and iOS operating systems, but for Google, implementing them correctly could ensure a stronger market position and allow expansion into the 2-in-1 tablet segment, where it still struggles.
How did they hint that Android N refers to our beloved Nutella? With a post about the update in the final stages, where one of Google’s engineers uses a play on words referring to the name. Translated into Italian, it means “We’re not telling you yet,” but in the original version, there’s a spelling twist and a missing “g,” making the reference quite clear: “we’re nut tellin’ you yet.”
