Internet and Social Media are becoming increasingly important in people’s lives, how do we know? Thanks to an annual report that allows us to discover how many users there are in the world, how often they connect to Social Media and, above all, what are the future conversion estimates on which to base our strategies.
The last few months have shown growth at all levels, both in terms of social channel usage and in terms of volume and interaction of people:
- The number of active internet users has exceeded 3 billion, while only 18 months ago it was 2.5 billion; this means that 42% of the world’s population browses the internet.
- The number of Social accounts is over 2 billion, with a 12% growth compared to last year.
- The number of people connecting to the internet via smartphones has increased, with over 300 million more people compared to last year.
As for the estimates for our country, these tell us that the penetration rate is higher than the global average, but our users prefer to access internet pages from smartphones rather than from PCs and prefer to browse several times a day, but for a shorter time than the average:
- 60% of Italians regularly access the internet.
- Social accounts are over 28 million.
- The data that has seen the greatest increase is related to Mobile access, which has recorded an +11% in the last 12 months.
- On average, the time spent daily on the internet is estimated to be around 6.7 hours, of which 2.5 are dedicated to the use of Social Networks.
But what are the most used platforms worldwide?
In first place is Facebook, which for months has far exceeded one billion active users, but it is not the only growing Social; WhatsApp, for example, has recently surpassed 900 million users, compared to 400 million last year.
Following are Facebook Messenger and WeChat, used by half a billion people, and the newcomer, Instagram, which is now used by more than 300 million people.
In Italy, these trends are even stronger, although in our ranking the first and second places are reversed; WhatsApp is the most used service every month!
