“Three billion: that’s how many people—at least once a month—connect to social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, along with their local alternatives scattered across the web! What are the next milestones?”
“The ‘social network population’ has just reached and surpassed the enviable milestone of 3 billion people. According to the latest estimates from We Are Social and Hootsuite, this is the number of individuals who visit at least one platform—such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram—or their lesser-known local alternatives at least once a month. Included in this count is, of course, Facebook, the unbeatable global leader in terms of monthly active users, along with steadily rising social networks like Instagram (which recently surpassed Snapchat in terms of average user connection time), less crowded platforms like Twitter and Pinterest, and high-traffic ‘localized’ alternatives (such as Vkontakte in Russia or Qzone in China).
Together, these platforms reach about 40% of the global population—an absolutely impressive figure, considering the relative novelty of the subject: Facebook’s launch dates back to 2004, and even then, access was limited.
To understand the magnitude of this figure, consider that the entire World Wide Web, according to the same data, has a penetration rate of 51%—and it has had significantly more time to establish itself.
And what now? The growth shows no signs of slowing down: with new platforms continuously emerging, established platforms reinventing themselves, and social networks in decline, the total number of users across these networks has increased by about 120 million compared to the previous survey. Considering the latest data was from just last quarter—not years ago—the math is clear: over the past four months, a million people each day have joined this global army!
